Registered Nurses play a key role in nursing homes; a very different but equally rewarding environment to the average hospital ward. Some nurses may indeed relish the opportunity to deliver professional nursing care in a more homely, natural and relaxed setting where patient turnover is likely to be more stable. In addition to attending to a patients immediate needs, they generally plan a wide range of elderly patients’care from medicines to therapy to diet, evaluating progress and making changes to ensure the individual receives the best care possible. Registered Nurses hold the highest nursing position in nursing homes as they oversee the activities of the rest of the staff, ensuring basic care needs are met and the highest standards of personal hygiene maintained. Typical tasks for the Registered Nurse will include:

  • Monitoring vital signs
  • Administering medication
  • Changing dressings
  • Checking the status of wounds
  • Attending patient care-plan meetings
  • Overseeing Care and Support staff
  • Administering enemas
  • Giving intravenous medications and fluids
  • Taking blood
  • Counselling families
  • Conducting range of motion exercises
  • Monitoring blood sugar levels
  • Consulting with medical physicians
  • Administering oxygen

Some Registered Nurses might advance into nursing home manager positions, responsible for managing the entire facility. Duties include managing staff, handling budgets and making sure patients receive quality care, aiming to consistently exceed regulatory standards. After running a single successful home, some Registered Nurses will progress to managing several homes on an Operational or Strategic Management basis.
